'It was billowing black smoke': Car engulfed in flames after police chase

A car engulfed in flames blocked the New South Wales Pacific Highway on Sunday after a police pursuit.

Stranded drivers could only watch on, waiting for fire crews to arrive near Crabbes Creek.

“It was billowing black smoke,” witness Felicity Mandile said.

Another witness said it was a nervous encounter, because they were unsure what was happening or if the car's occupants would emerge armed.

Police first crossed paths with the Ford Falcon at Grafton, more than 180 kilometres away from the fiery scene at Crabbes Creek.

The driver allegedly failed to pull over for a breath test.

Highway patrol officers picked up the chase as they fled, twice using road spikes to try to stop the sedan.

“They just come out ahead, threw the spike onto the road, got him and he was probably driving without rubber on his tyres for probably about 60kms,” witness Wayne Anderson said.

No tyres was no deterrent, with wheel rims sparking on the road's surface.

The driver only pulled over as fire consumed his car.

Behind the wheel, police allege, was a 20-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl.

Both were arrested at the scene and are expected to face numerous charges.
