Raising hell: Three arrested after Sydney bushfire damages several homes

A teenager has been charged and two other people arrested in Sydney's west over an out-of-control bushfire that took more than 200 firefighters to control.

At least seven properties and several vehicles were damaged in the fire that ripped through Cranebrook Friday.

Stock loses are still being tallied, police said in a statement.

One person was treated for minor burns and smoke inhalation.

“About 12.25am today (Saturday, November 5), another boy, aged 16, was arrested at Penrith Railway Station,” the statement said.

“He was taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with intentionally cause fire and be reckless as to its spread.”

It's believed the arrests were a result of a tip off from a member of the public.

The fire started in Cranebrook on Friday afternoon and quickly spread to Llandilo and Londonderry.

The NSW Rural Fire Service issued an emergency warning at Llandilo and Londonderry just before 3:30pm, sending alerts to residents via text message advising them to seek shelter.

The blaze started in grasslands near Cranebrook, but by 2pm the fire had already spread to cover an area of more than three hectares.

In the late afternoon, the fire was downgraded to a 'watch and act' status. Firefighter crews, an air crane and a large air tanker are still working to contain the fire.

The NSW RFS confirmed the Northern Road has been closed in both directions between Ninth Avenue and Cranebrook.

Schools in the area were evacuated, along with a nursing home.

The 200 firefighters at the scene battled with strong northwesterly winds reaching 60km/h.
