Road tolls, car rego and parking fines - put it on your Opal card

Your Opal card could soon be much more than just a way to pay for public transport in Sydney.

The NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance is planning to extend it to cover many government fees, such as road tolls, car registration and even taxis.

From the moment Sydney first tapped to travel, the Opal card system has divided opinions.

Now the government wants to multiply its uses.

“Over eight million cards now issued. What we want to be able to do is take it to the next level,” Mr Constance said.

That means using the card to pay for things like tolls, car registration, taxis and even fines.

The transport department is looking into what can be done with the technology and will report back to the minister.

They will also consider integrating other contactless payment systems like Apple Pay, so users won’t even need to reach for their wallets.

“I think in, you know, in terms of the Opal card, the opportunities are boundless,” Mr Constance said.

And possibly, within a few years, just a tap away.
