Drivers attempt to run down masked man in violent carjacking
A dashcam has captured the moment a driver attempted to run down a would-be carjacker armed with a baseball bat in Melbourne.
In the footage the man can be seen wearing a balaclava and wielding the weapon as he strikes at the car and motions for the driver to get out.
But rather than exiting the vehicle the man drove directly through the red light at his attacker before spinning his car around and trying a second time to hit the man.
He told 7 News his reaction was pure "fear and anger because how dare he".
The attempted carjacking is the latest in a spate of similar crimes in Melbourne with one incident seeing a man try to enter multiple vehicles on Cranbourne Road in Narre Warren.
Grandparents Margaret and Russell Pitts were one of the man's intended victims.
"He said to me get out of the car get out of the car and I just screamed," Margaret told 7 News.
The man smashed in one of the windows of Margaret's car and she also was forced to speed through a red light to get away.
The pair told 7 News they stopped nearby with Russell grabbing a makeshift weapon from the boot of his car and spending 20 minutes looking for their attacker.
"I went to the back of the car and got a shifter out and said 'I'm going after this b-----, I'm going to kill him'," he told 7 News.
"That's my wife you've just terrorised. It's not happening. And it's got to stop."
It's believed the would-be carjacker tried to get into at least four cars in 15 minutes and even cut himself during an attempt and left blood on one of the cars.
