Note left on doorstep after neighbour's 'stupid mistake'

Normally when people leave behind hand-written note's it's over a parking gripe or neighbourly dispute. This time it was the total opposite.

Normally when people stumble across hand-written notes placed on their doorstep, it's to do with a neighbourhood dispute or request. Aussies often leave letters to avoid confrontation, but sometimes in doing so they end up with the opposite situation on their hands.

In Sydney this week, one woman shared her surprise after she found a hand-written letter and a box of chocolates left behind by a neighbour who admitted their recent bad behaviour, offering an apology in the former of sweet treats.

The gesture, the woman said, "was totally unnecessary" but "it made my day".

"Thank you to the kind person who left these treatos as an apology for parking across my driveway," the woman wrote online. In the note, the neighbour said they realised they'd "made a stupid mistake".

"Hi there, this is very late but I wanted to apologise for parking over your driveway the other week," it began. "Such a stupid mistake and I'm really sorry! Won't happen again! Warm regards, apologetic neighbour."

People responding said it was "so lovely" to see such a "sweet gesture". "Sometimes, people are human," a woman wrote. "So lovely. Better late than never," another said. "This is so sweet!" said a third.

The Sydney woman's surprise letter comes days after another was left behind for a Queensland mother, with the sentiment in stark contrast.

A war of words broke out in a “friendly” suburb after the new mum discovered the note from a neighbour complaining about the noise her four-and-a-half-month-old son makes.

“I was just checking my mailbox and saw a letter,” Tiffany, who did not want her last name published, earlier told Yahoo News Australia. “I was pretty upset by it, like I was in tears.”
