'This is not right': 'Racist' Chocolate Easter ducks pulled from supermarket shelves

A supermarket has been forced to remove and rebrand chocolate Easter ducks over claims the product was racist.

Waitrose, a UK supermarket chain, released a packet of three chocolate ducks ahead of Easter.

They come in flavours milk, white and dark chocolate.

But complaints arose over nicknames given to the three chocolates with the dark chocolate named the “ugly”, while the other two were named “crispy” and “fluffy”.

Presumably, the dark chocolate duck was nicknamed “ugly” after the story of the ugly duckling who eventually turned into a swan.

But Twitter users were not impressed.

“Overheard a woman saying, ‘This is not right’,” one woman tweeted.

“I agree, doesn’t look good at all. Thousands of other options – why ugly?”

One man added it was “very disrespectful”.

“Why they thought this would even sit right with people confuses me – the ugly duckling was white so this doesn’t even make sense,” another woman tweeted.

In a statement to The Telegraph, Waitrose apologised.

“We are very sorry for any upset caused by the name of this product, it was absolutely not our intention to cause any offence,” the supermarket said.

Waitrose added it has since removed the ducks from shelves and re-labelled them.

But some Twitter users did not agree with Waitrose’s decision to change the labelling.

“Waitrose will be introducing transparent tasteless ducks so as not to offend anyone,” one man tweeted.

Another added: “This is not racist at all”.

This story emerged after the ACT Government declared a hot air balloon would not fly at a festival because it deemed the aircraft racist in February.
