Mystery shrouds 'amazing' plaque embedded in tree

A tree in southeast Queensland has residents scratching their heads after a plaque was found embedded in it.

Trish Evans was enjoying a stroll at the Deception Bay foreshore, north of Brisbane, on August 22 when she came across the tree containing a metal plaque, which appears to read “Susan Agnes”.

“I just noticed something glinting in the early morning sun and had to see what it was,” Ms Evans told Yahoo News Australia.

“Mum thinks it may say nana at the top. Maybe a memorial to a loved grandma? Someone else took a better pic and the date is 1935.”

Ms Evans said she had never come across a plaque like this one and shared the photos of it on Facebook.

“Awesome find,” one man wrote.

One woman called it “amazing”.

As for what the plaque is there for no one seems to know.

Yahoo News Australia asked Moreton Bay Regional Council about the plaque and Susan Agnes, but a search through archives and the city’s library found nothing.

But there are some theories about the plaque.

One suggestion was the tree was planted in memory of someone and 1935 was either a year of birth or death.

However, one woman wrote it might be best to leave the plaque shrouded in mystery.

“It is not for us to know everything,” she wrote.

“Lovely it has survived all these years and so let the tree in its wisdom deal with it.

“There is no need for us here today to interfere.”
