Bartender who died in Gold Coast balcony fall lived in area for just six weeks

A young man who fell to his death from a high-rise balcony on the Gold Coast on Tuesday has been identified as a New Zealander who only recently moved to the area.

The 22-year-old, named in media as Liam Kearns from Christchurch, fell from the 15th floor of the Surfers Paradise building about 12.30am on Tuesday.

New Zealand media outlet Stuff reported police were treating his death as an accident, and were investigating whether he was hanging off the balcony before falling.

Mr Kearns had reportedly moved to the Gold Coast about six weeks ago.

Dave Shields, president of Northcliffe Surf Club where Mr Kearns worked as a bartender, told the Gold Coast Bulletin the man’s death was a “terrible tragedy”.

“Liam had only been with us a short time but was a nice young guy and a valued member of our team,” he told the Bulletin.

Christchurch-based St Albans Cricket Club wrote on Facebook offering its “deepest condolences” to his family.

“RIP bud pleasure to play a couple of games with you.”
