Mum's disturbing discovery in rental apartment

A woman made an unnerving discovery when she noticed an unwanted bunch of mushrooms sprouting from a wall inside a rental property she had only moved into months prior.

In a frustrated post to a community group on Facebook, the Sydney woman said the growth left her feeling “grossed out” and worried it would cause harm to her family, including her three-year-old boy.

She said the tiles were re-grouted after she complained to her property manager about the mushrooms, which “covered the problem” without solving it.

“Water must have been leaking from the shower through the back of the wall for some time,” she said.

“Found these tasty mushrooms sprouted out of our door frame.”

The woman said she removed the mushrooms and rubbed the area with vinegar, but appealed to others for suggestions on ways she might be able to keep them from returning.

Fellow social media users urged the family to move out urgently out of fear the fungi could have serious implications on their health.

“I would be getting out, mould is an issue and not good for your health. No amount of cleaning is going to get rid of it,” one said.

Another suggested the small harvest could prove fatal, writing: “They are toadstools by the looks and would be very deadly if your children were to find and eat them.”

Several others said the fungi would have a toxic effect not only on health, but on everything in the home including furniture and clothing.
