Why mum thinks she can free husband jailed over fatal crash
A Melbourne mother has launched a desperate bid to free her husband from prison two years after he was jailed over a fiery crash that killed two young mates.
In November 2014, Nicholas George was travelling alone in his Holden Crewman ute along the Mornington Peninsula Freeway in Dromana when he was involved in a collision that killed 23-year-old friends Daniel Hay and Adam Beardsmore.
The 51-year-old has now served two years of his 12-year sentence after a county court jury found him guilty of culpable driving causing their deaths.
Since then, his devoted wife Nicole has been investigating the case and she now claims she’s uncovered evidence that proves he’s innocent.
After a High Court appeal was dismissed, she said she found the most telling evidence in her own backyard, where her husband’s wrecked Holden ute remains.
Police had told the court that the ute wasn’t fitted with an engine control unit module which can record crash data, but Ms George later decided to take a look for herself and recorded it as proof.
“There it is, unbelievable,” she can be heard saying as she searches the car.
Ms George has spent the past 12 months compiling a 70-page petition for mercy which she will hand to the attorney general, adamant that it contains enough evidence to force a new trial.
“I feel confident that he’s going to get a fair go now and the truth will come out,” she told 7 News.
The Melbourne resident says she believes the other driver lost control while using his mobile phone, which was found burnt into his hand.
But as Ms George continues to try and exonerate her husband, one victim’s mother says she has been left devastated by the latest push.
“I was devastated that they’re even attempting to drag us all through this over again,” Kelly Beardsmore said.
“It just feels to us that they won’t leave them lay to rest.”
