Miracle baby born while mum was in coma celebrates first birthday

A baby boy has celebrated his first birthday after his mum gave birth to him while in a coma.

It’s a miracle little Victorian baby Axle Hawthorn made it through birth after his mum, Sarah, contracted a deadly strain of influenza while eight months’ pregnant.

Her condition was so serious she was placed in an induced coma at the Alfred Hospital.

Axle was delivered by an emergency caesarean section while his mum was unconscious.

The little boy’s dad, Rob, said his son’s birth wasn’t the end of the family’s ordeal though.

“My head was exploding with what was going on with Sarah,” Mr Hawthorn said.

“Let alone three-hour feeds with Axle.”

It took three months for Ms Hawthorn to wake up and she then had to learn to walk, talk and move again.

However, she did get to meet a little miracle for the first time.

“It was like I’ve missed so much, but now it’s amazing,” the mum said.

Mr Hawthorn made sure Axle and his mum spent plenty of time together, even while she was sick.

He said doctors let his wife lay with his son.

It’s been eight months since Ms Hawthorn left hospital, but she’s still recovering.

Her lungs and kidneys aren’t fully functioning, and she’s building muscle strength after spending so long in a coma.

However, she had made time to thank those who saved her life and delivered her son.

“How do you say thank you to a group of people who saved your life?” she said.

“And can give you the joy of being with your first born?”
