Melbourne father-of-three killed celebrating birthday in Spain

A Melbourne father has died after he was hit by a boat while diving off the coast of Spain.

Stephen Jones died while diving off the island of Formentera, an island south of Ibiza last week, the Herald Sun reported on Tuesday night.

The father-of-three was on holiday with his wife and six friends to celebrate his and his wife’s 40th birthdays, according to the paper.

Mr Jones’ father-in-law Andrew de Crespigny described him as “the most magnificent person” who was selfless and always considered others before himself.

“We were absolutely blessed to have a son-in-law the calibre of Stephen. We have lost one of the most fine gentlemen you could meet,” Mr de Crespigny told the publication.

Mr Jones’ children Will, 9, Jean, 7, and Herbie, 4, arrived back in Melbourne with their mother on Monday evening, the Herald reported.

The couple were the “superb” parents, devoted to their children and each other, Mr de Crespigny said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) confirmed to Yahoo News that it is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian man who died in Spain.

Mr Jones was the son of prominent businessman Russell Jones who, while head of Amcor, was involved in a price-fixing scandal with Visy boss Richard Pratt.
