Man's incredible deed for struggling neighbour: 'Blown away'

The Queensland resident's home was in disarray after she dropped all plans to be with her ill mum.

We've all had one of those moments in life — when everything else fades behind the shadow of a glaring priority.

When a Queensland resident learnt her mother was diagnosed with cancer, she dropped everything and travelled interstate to care for her, leaving all other life tasks behind in her wake.

After returning home four months later, with her garden overgrown and rental inspection looming, she reluctantly raised her hand and asked for the one thing many of us never ask for.

"It's hard making this [Facebook] post, but I've realised I need to reach out and ask for some help," Virginia admitted on Tuesday.

'Completely blown away'

Within moments Virginia began to receive messages from strangers, offering their time and labour free of charge in the hopes to alleviate her "overwhelming" stress.

"By 8am the next morning, Calvin* was on his way to my house," Virginia told Yahoo News Australia, pointing to her unkempt front lawn. "He mowed, removed all the weeds that had grown in the grass, and even tidied the front of the house area so it looked presentable again."

Despite going through a "rough time" himself recently, the neighbour – who wished to remain anonymous – explained why he wanted to help Virginia.

"I was always taught to help those in need," he told Yahoo.

"I think my problems or worries are never too big that I should be self-absorbed and not give back to the community," he continued, before adding: "And I love moving lawns, there is something so therapeutic about it."

A local business also offered to remove the wasp nest that had made itself at home in Virginia's mail box, with others staying in touch to ensure all other bases were covered ahead of the inspection.

"It felt like everyone had been waiting to hear the good news that I had received the help I needed and [everyone] was ready to celebrate the efforts of the community," she shared.

Virginia added she was "completely blown away" by people eager to help during the challenging time.

"Everyone’s kindness has truly helped me see the light in such a dark situation. It was such a needed reminder of the good that is in this world - I am proud to call this place home."
