Speeding driver's bizarre excuse after being hit with second fine when caught red-handed

A driver heading south along the M1 near NSW’s Central Coast has been hit with a combined fine of $612 as well as eight demerit points despite his best attempts to avoid punishment.

The motorist, driving a blue Holden Cruze, was pulled over for speeding at about 5am on Wednesday at Ourimbah, but officers were also suspicious of what was going on inside the vehicle.

While pursuing the driver, police had spotted the driver handling a mobile device through the rear window.

Officers then spotted the witness place the device in a cradle before a video began to play.

When asked about his action inside the car, the driver was insisted his eyes were on the road.

“I was listening to a podcast but I wasn’t watching it,” he told police.

He was subsequently slapped with a $337 fine for using a mobile phone when not permitted while copping five demerit points.

After being detected speeding at 128km/h in a 110km/h zone and 97km/h in an 80km/h zone, he was handed a $275 fine for exceeding the speed limit by 10km/h and handed three demerit points.

NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol Command have been revealing a series of speeding offences in recent weeks, including a motorist last month who was caught driving in the middle of the night at 260km/h with his headlights off.
