Manhunt for 'night stalker' who has police baffled: 'We don't understand'

Victoria Police have released images of a man who has approached dozens of homes at night, but what he does inside has police scratching their heads.

Police are scouring the area southwest of Melbourne in the hunt for a man dubbed the ‘night stalker’, as the motive behind his bizarre escapades continues to puzzle investigators.

Since the start of February, the intruder has targeted dozens of homes across Geelong, the Surf Coast and Werribee, with CCTV cameras capturing him lurking outside properties. Fortunately he’s only managed to get inside two homes. However, after entering he just walked around before leaving empty-handed.

“We’re obviously really concerned, we don't understand his motivation,” Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Gavin Mullins told the Today show on Tuesday. “He is not stealing or damaging any property inside, he’s not contacting anyone inside.”

Man to face multiple charges

Police allege the prowler has been approaching multiple homes in suburbs including Bell Post Hill, Highton, Tippleside, Torquay and Werribee since January 29, and attempting to open the front doors.

While there has been no damage to property or items stolen, if caught the man will face multiple charges for attempted aggravated burglary and trespassing.

“He hasn't made any contact with people but we certainly don't want him to increase this behaviour and for it to advance onto anything else,” Det Sr Sgt Mullins said.

Public called in to help

The Geelong Divisional Response Unit has launched a special operation and is now looking to the public to help catch the intruder. By releasing images and vision of the man, they’re hoping someone will recognise him.

He is described as being Caucasian appearance and approximately 180cm tall with a medium build. Police believe he is aged between 30 and 40 and say he’s worn a broad brimmed sun hat and a jumper with an adidas logo on it during some of the incidents.

Police issue warning for locals to lock up

In the meantime, while the manhunt continues, police are warning the public to securely lock their doors.

“Generally he is not going to be able to breach that, he is not forcing entry by breaking windows or making himself obvious in any way,” Det Sr Sgt Mullins said. “So just locking your doors and securing your windows will prevent this.”
