Man learns of $20 million Powerball win while scrolling through Facebook

The Cronulla man said he burst into tears when he found out he won Powerball.

A mystery NSW man who won an astounding $20 million in Thursday's $40 million Powerball draw discovered he was one of 21 new Aussie millionaires while scrolling through Facebook.

The Cronulla man in his 40s said he doesn’t normally check his Lotto tickets until the weekend, but saw on the social media platform on Friday that officials from The Lott were looking for a division one ticket holder that had yet to come forward.

“I was just on Facebook and saw The Lott was looking for a mystery winner who had purchased their ticket at One Stop Shop in Kirrawee. I thought, ‘that’s where I buy my tickets from’,” he said.

“Normally I don’t check my tickets until Sunday, but I thought I’d better check it today. I can’t believe it! I’ve bloody done it!”

The winner said he was “happy before” his big win, “but this is just a whole new level”.

“I’m already happy and this is just going to make a lot of other people around me happy — my mum, my family. The kids are set!” he revealed. “And I’m going to have a lot of fun and I want to make sure the people around me have a lot of fun too.”

As for tonight, however, he plans on celebrating his newly-minted millionaire status with “some cold beers and Chinese takeaway”.

Some Melbourne syndicate winners still in the dark

The second division one winning entry in Thursday’s Powerball draw has been identified as a 20-person strong Melbourne syndicate, who will pocket a cool million each.

The syndicate was set up by Vic Market Lotto in the city’s CBD, with shares sold at nine other Tatts outlets across the city.

“While members of this winning group might not know each other, they are now united by the fact that tonight they each became a Powerball millionaire,” The Lott spokesperson Matt Hart said.

“Some of these division one winning syndicate members have already begun celebrating their good fortune knowing their bank account is about to be boosted with more than $1 million. While we’ll be reaching out to those winners who are registered, there are still some unregistered syndicate members who may have yet to discover their good news."
