Little boy attacked by four dingoes on Fraser Island
A little boy remains in hospital after being bitten by a dingo on Queensland’s Fraser Island.
The six-year-old from Cairns was holidaying with his parents when they heard him scream and saw him surrounded by the pack of wild animals on Saturday night.
He had been swimming and playing with his parents on the beach near the Govi camping site about 6pm before running up ahead and out of sight beyond a sand dune.
His mother told 7News she heard her son scream before seeing him pinned under four dingoes, one biting his leg several times.
Dingo attack expert Cheryl Bryant said the incident is a stark reminder to parents to keep a watchful eye on their children.
“He would’ve been terrified. A young child of that age shouldn’t be confronted with that situation,” she said.
“You just can’t take your eyes off children for one second when you’re in a wilderness area.”
Campers and kids say most interactions with the island’s 100 plus population of dingoes aren’t intimidating.
“I find it pretty crazy to be honest because they seem so tame,” one witness said.
If rangers can identify the animal that bit the little boy, there’s a high chance it’ll be put down.
Conservationists say as far as they’re aware, the last dingo destroyed on Fraser was early last year after it showed signs of aggression.
“I hope nothing happens to the animals, because obviously this was just a really unfortunate incident,” Ms Bryant said.
“I mean if they had really meant business, that child wouldn’t have been walking now.”
