Kangaroo on the hop at Melbourne primary school

A lost kangaroo has made its way into an Abbotsford primary school - surprising students on their last day.

The marsupial arrived at Abbotsford Primary School this morning, just two kilometres from the CBD.

It had been seen hopping down Victoria Street before dropping into the school, delighting pupils on their last day of class.

"I walked into school and I was greeted by a kangaroo, which was standing in our garden,' pupil Jessica Kang said.

Principal Latham Burns found the roo having a feed in the vegie garden and called Wildlife Victoria.

"I was shocked because you wouldn't expect to see a kangaroo in an inner city school like this," he said.

He filmed as volunteers set up a net and waited.

Healthy and without any injuries, the roo, nicknamed 'Kang' by pupils, was captured and taken back into bushland - a much safer place to be.

Over the past three days, wildlife rescuers have had almost 70 calls for wayward kangaroos in urban areas, but not all of them are as lucky as 'Kang'.

Wildlife Victoria officer Amy Amato said: "We're encroaching on their land so they're ending up in suburbia, sometimes all the way into the city we're finding kangaroos and wallabies."

The school is glad the marsupial moved on but are grateful for the experience.

"It supports our motto 'diversity in learning'. We'll have anyone here, even kangaroos," Mr Burns said.
