'It's illegal': Couple's extreme move to stop people parking outside house
A Far North Queensland couple has come up with a “hilarious” but illegal method to discourage people parking outside their property.
The resident from Yorkeys Knob has installed a parking meter on a nature strip outside their house.
It’s not clear if it’s operational but a woman has shared photos of the meter on Facebook and claims the couple responsible used to leave notes on people’s cars to stop them parking in the area.
“So, they decided to install their own parking meter,” she wrote.
Councillor wants meter ‘gone by the weekend’
The use of a fake parking meter could land the couple in hot water. Parking in most areas, unless it’s a private facility, is monitored and policed by the local council.
Queensland Police told The Cairns Post if a complaint was received about the meter it would have to be investigated.
However, Division 8 councillor Rhonda Coghlan said it is “definitely illegal” and “will be removed”.
“It’s on council property,” Cr Coghlan said.
“I’m hoping that it’s gone by this weekend.”
On Facebook, people were bewildered by the idea.
“Unbelievable,” one man wrote.
Others called the idea “illegal” but “very clever”.
“I saw it and thought it was a joke,” one woman wrote.
Some found humour in the idea though.
“Where did they buy the meter from? I would like one,” one woman wrote.
Another called it “hilarious”.
Queensland Police has been contacted for comment.
