IKEA and Lego collaboration sends Aussies into meltdown
Two iconic global brands have sent loyal fans into meltdown over the launch of a bizarre new product.
Toy brand LEGO announced on Thursday it would be releasing a line of revolutionary products in partnership with Swedish furniture company IKEA.
The range, named BYGGLEK, will consist of a collection of life-size connectable toy furniture products - a set of three small boxes, two sets of bigger boxes, and one set of LEGO bricks.
Fans of the plastic interlocking building blocks who already have the toys at home will able to connect their existing blocks with items in the new range, the company said.
“As the BYGGLEK boxes are equipped with LEGO studs on the top and the front, the storage boxes can be integrated as part of the LEGO builds,” a statement from the company read.
“People can store their stories inside them, and proudly display their creations on top of them.”
The range was designed as both a fun and practical way for households to keep spaces tidy, LEGO said.
“The new BYGGLEK collection aims to be a foundation for play in the home and a way for people to let their imagination run wild and build their creations – all whilst reducing clutter.”
The collection will be available at IKEA stores nationally in 2021.
In comments on a Facebook post teasing the launch earlier on Thursday, fans of LEGO celebrated while others expressed their more pessimistic expectations.
“If this is LEGO furniture, I'm abandoning my dreams of a modern, simplistic home with furniture in clean shades, and plunging us into LEGO hell,” one person wrote.
“LEGO and IKEA? This sounds like I'm going to have to assemble it myself,” a less enthusiastic social media user said.
“My two great loves together (don't tell the wife and kids I said this. They may be jealous),” a third wrote.
