The sharing economy has ramped up in the last few years, with platforms like Car Next Door and Airbnb allowing people to rent their vehicles and homes for cash.
But for those of you who own a mobile home, you stand to earn $10,000 in just six weeks.
The caravan and campervan industry is worth a whopping $23.1 billion, with sales spiking around 30 per cent in the last year alone. And if you own a van, you can make thousands if you forgo your own trips for cash.
According to caravan sharing platform Camplify, van owners are making between $5,000 and $15,000 across the summer months alone, with some making $10,000 in just six weeks in the peak of summer.
Single mum, Deborah, from Boondall in Queensland has made over $12,000 in summer bookings for her motorhome. Deborah said she uses the extra cash for household expenses and renovations.
Young entrepreneur Seb from Sydney’s Freshwater is planning on building his own rental fleet of campervans, and renting them out via Camplify. He’s already made $13,000 in summer bookings.
“We’re seeing such high numbers of bookings for caravanning holidays that many of the small family van hiring businesses on our platform are expanding their fleets simply to keep up with the demand,” founder and chief executive of Camplify, Justin Hales said.
“It’s clear there’s never been a better time for Aussies to embrace the van sharing economy for holidaymakers and van owners alike.”
Hiring fees can range from around $140 per day, with an $80 service fee on top.
Campervans can cost around $30,000 to purchase - but according to Camplify, you’d likely make your money back in rentals.
The sharing platform received record bookings in August, beating out the same time last year by 71 per cent. All in all, local van owners made $2 million in total just from that month alone. That’s a year on year increase of 146 per cent.
And the growth trajectory continues: in September, bookings surged 91.7 per cent on last year, and more than doubled the month of August.
‘Holiday here this year’
The report comes after Tourism Australia unveiled its latest campaign, ‘Holiday Here This Year’, to encourage Australians to spend their dollars on home soil after the industry was annihilated by bushfires and Covid-19.
“Our 'Holiday Here This Year' campaign is all about galvanizing Australians to support their fellow Australians by booking a holiday wherever they can around the country,” Tourism Australia managing director, Phillipa Harrison, said.
“With the peak summer travel period just around the corner, it is crucial that we continue to remind people of all the incredible destinations and tourism experiences that are right on their doorstep waiting to be explored.”
