Horrifying cause of woman's freak injuries after fight with sister

A woman has been rushed to hospital with freak injuries after a fight with her sister at the dinner table.

The 29-year-old, from Taiwan, was taken to Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital's emergency room with facial trauma, including a mild nose bleed and swelling in her left eye, but doctors noted she had no underlying illness, according to her case in The Journal of Emergency Medicine.

She had been attacked by her sister and somehow chopsticks became lodged in her nose, which also had some cuts on it.

An X-ray turned up nothing unusual, but one week later she returned to hospital.

The woman told doctors “some parts of the chopsticks used in the attack were missing”.

She also noticed something grey lodged in her nose when looking in the mirror.

However, she told doctors the obstruction was not causing her nose to run and she had no further eye swelling.

Doctors noticed two plastic-wooden fragments lodged in her nose.

“Two pieces of the chopstick were observed on computed tomography (CT) scan: one penetrating the nasal septum from the left nasal cavity to the right maxillary sinus and another from the left anterior ethmoid sinus to the sphenoid sinus,” researchers wrote.

She underwent surgery to remove two pieces: one 3.5cm long and another 5cm long.

The woman had no further complications after the fragments were removed.

It is not clear why her sister attacked her.
