'That’s a dog': Heartbreaking twist after zoo accused of housing fake wolf

A zoo in China has revealed the heartbreaking truth after it was accused of trying to swindle visitors who spotted what appeared to be a lone dog in a ‘wolf’ enclosure.

“That’s a dog, not a wolf,” a visitor to the Wuhan Mt Jiufeng Forest Zoo, in Hubei province, said in a video shared online after visiting last Saturday.

A zoo representative responded to the accusations, admitting it was a dog that was seen at the enclosure, however the wolf did actually exist.

Apparently, the canine was a companion to the male wolf, which the staffer told Shanghai-based news portal Thepaper.cn was taking a rest indoors at the time the dog was photographed.

“The wolf was alone there because he couldn’t get along with other wolves. He was always fighting and getting hurt,” the zoo worker told the news outlet.

It turns out, the wolf became “depressed” in isolation from the rest of the pack, so zoo keepers introduced two puppies to the enclosure, to keep him company.

He bonded to one of the pups, which stayed on to keep him company, while the other was removed.

“After two years they have apparently become good companions,” the zoo employee said.

Following the admissions of the wolf and dog’s unlikely friendship, footage has been shared of the pair playing in the enclosure together.
