Harrowing last photo of mum and daughter moments before death

Photos of a smiling mother and daughter show them enjoying a day out at a waterfall shortly before they were swept to their deaths after they were caught in fast-moving waters.

The tragic incident took place at the Riva Waterfall trail in the municipality of Quatro Barras in the Brazilian state of Parana on April 21.

The family visited the waterfall at the natural beauty spot and were reportedly surprised by a strong torrent of water that swept them off their feet.

Three people died at the scene – 46-year-old Andrea Michalski, nine-year-old daughter Ana Sophia Michalski, and Andrea's 44-year-old brother-in-law Cid de Padua, according to news site Metropoles.

The family members lived in the Brazilian city of Curitiba in the same state and were visiting the area on a day out with four other relatives.

The surviving family members managed to cross the waterfall, but the three victims were caught by surprise and dragged about 700 metres by the fast-moving water.

The huge increase of water that led to the victims being taken by surprise was caused by several rainstorms in the days leading up to the tragic incident, also causing a nearby river to flood.

The bodies were taken to a nearby morgue before being released to the family on Thursday.

It is unclear if the local authorities are investigating the incident.
