Fisherman reveals his terrifying 40-minute ordeal with shark

A Sunshine Coast fisherman has revealed how he survived a terrifying 40-minute ordeal after a four-metre shark attacked his kayak, leaving it to slowly sink.

Kyle Roberts revealed to 7News he knew the risks and he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The 31-year-old was fishing from his kayak off Moffat Beach on Thursday morning when he was flung into the water, surfacing to find the shark with its jaws still clamped around one end.

The fishing fanatic dad from Caloundra, who often uploads fishing videos from his kayak, was able to call for help on a radio he carries with him.

“He happened to be carrying a radio which was fantastic for him because he was able to then radio for assistance,” paramedic Keren Hanwright said.

Mr Roberts clung to his sinking kayak for 40 minutes as he waited to be rescued by lifesavers on jetskis.

Mr Roberts revealed about 10 minutes before the tiger shark lunged, he’d caught and released a hammerhead which could be why he received the extra, unwanted attention.

While he’s seen plenty of sharks before, Mr Roberts knows just how lucky he was.

“He was shaken up but he was OK. He was talking, he was sitting down,” Ms Hanwright revealed.

SLSQ Duty Officer Dave McLean told 7News he agreed with Mr Roberts when he said they “saved his life”.

Mr Roberts said he believed the predator was a tiger shark and was about four metres in length.

“Probably wouldn’t pay for him to buy a lottery ticket, I think he’s used up all his luck,” Water Police Sgt Kyle Bates joked.

The Westpac rescue helicopter was sent to look for the shark but there was no sign of it following the attack.
