Expat TikToker sends Aussies into frenzy over Kmart debate

An American expat has sent Australians into a frenzy after claiming Kmart is better than Target in a series of viral TikTok videos.

Hannah Shuman initially created controversy in April when she posted about her trip to Target and how it compares to the chain in the US.

“I thought Americans were obsessed with Target but it's nothing compared to Australians,” she can be heard saying.

“I always start in the home goods area, I don't know why, I don't need anything for my home but I always go here,” she said, adding that the chain has cute items for kids and “absolutely kills it in the clothing game”.

The video was quickly inundated with outraged Aussies, who insisted Kmart is the most beloved of the two.

“There are literally no Australians obsessed with Target. They are obsessed with Kmart,” one woman wrote.

“Who is obsessed with Target? Not us. It’s always if Kmart doesn’t have it try Big W then Target,” another woman said.

A handful of the hundreds of commenters did agree with Ms Shuman regarding their clothing options.

Aussies' outrage prompts Kmart trip

The surprisingly large response prompted the young American woman to head to Kmart last week.

“Holy s*** you guys, you went ham on Target, you f***ing hated Target so now I’m gonna go where everyone told me to go, which is Kmart,” she said in a new TikTok clip.

“No hate on Kmart, I love Kmart, but let me tell you growing up in the United States Kmart was s***, it was awful and all went out of business.

“So it's basically the opposite of what's happened here,” she said.

Ms Shuman said she enjoyed Kmart’s “very wide selection” including clothes, beauty products, shoes and arts and crafts, but said stores always appear to be lacking in stock.

“I feel like I see a lot of bare shelves, plus with clothing, I can never ever, ever, ever find my size which is a six,” she said, adding that the home good are “really cute”.

Despite this, Ms Shuman said she still likes Target better than Kmart.

Lots of Kmart fans said the low stock is because of Covid, while others joked that the American's visa needs to be revoked.

“I retracted my like because Kmart is superior to Target. This video is un-Australian,” one person said.

“The reason there’s more at Target is because no one shops there and we got to Kmart,” a woman wrote.

A slew of Aussies came to the defence of Target, saying that although it can be more expensive, the quality of products is better.
