John Butler trio up for Aussie Music Prize

The John Butler Trio has joined the longlist to be in the running for the next Australian Music Prize.

There are 36 albums now in the running for the prestigious $30,000 award for the best album of 2014, judged by a panel of 15 music industry figures.

Melbourne's Bored Nothing, Lowlakes and Nun, alongside Sydney's Sweet Amphetamines, were announced as contenders for the prize also on Thursday.

Previous winners of the AMP include Big Scary (2013) The Jezabels (2011), Cloud Control (2010), Lisa Mitchell (2009), and inaugural winners The Drones (2005).

Other artists on this year's longlist include previous winners Augie March, hip-hop heroes Hilltop Hoods, nine-ARIA award nominated Chet Faker and rapper REMI.

The winner of the award will be announced in March.
