Dying model's family plead for help after donor changes his mind

The family of a Thai model dying of leukemia has begged a potential stem cell donor to save his life, after the donor backed out of the procedure.

“I don’t know who you are but if you see this message, our family would like to beg you to change your mind and donate the stem cells to Pram,” the family of model Pramthat “Pram” Sinkang, posted on August 11, according to The Star.

The fashion model was told by doctors that he would die from leukemia within six months, unless he received a stem cell donation.

Pram underwent chemotherapy and became stronger, however on July 23 doctors told him that his cancer had advanced and that chemo was no longer an option. Only a stem cell donation could save his life.

While Pram’s doctors identified a possible stem cell donor in February, the donor later changed his mind as his family did not approve of the procedure.

In allogeneic stem cell transplants, the stem cells are donated by another person whose tissue type is compatible with the patient’s and can be harvested or collected from bone marrow, blood stream or umbilical cord blood.

However, according to the Leukemia Foundtion, “unless you have an identical twin, your tissue type is different to the tissue type of almost everyone else in the world.”

In Australia, people may put themselves on the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry so that those in need can search them as potentially life saving donors.
