Dad hit and killed trying to help ducks cross the road

Fellow motorists praised the man's kind act before he was suddenly struck by another car

A father has been struck and killed by a car while helping a family of ducks cross a busy intersection.

The Californian man reportedly stopped his vehicle to offer assistance to the animals on Thursday night while fellow motorists watched the scene unfold, praising the man for his "nice" act before he was suddenly struck by a car that sent him flying, witnesses told local media.

"He helped them get up over the curb because all the little baby duckies were having trouble and then he walked in front of our car," 12-year-old William said.

The man can be seen wearing a maroon t-shirt and black shorts as he ushers the family of ducks across a busy road, with cars visible in the background.

William took pictures of the man, who has not been identified, and the family of ducks as they walked past and explained all cars had stopped at the intersection, even remaining stationary while the traffic lights were green.

"My mom rolled down the window and said, 'Good job, good job,' and I said, 'Good job' to him too," he said, before explaining seconds later the man was struck by another car that seemingly "came out of nowhere".

"I didn't see the car actually hit him. All I remember is the sound and then him flying across the intersection," he said. "His shoes and one of his socks were right in front of our car."

'Nicest person in the entire area'

William said he will remember the man for his act of kindness and pointed out that he offered assistance to the animals when no one else did.

"He was the only person to get out of the car and try and help them and probably the nicest person in the entire area. It's not fair," he said.

William's mother comforted the man's children who were reportedly inside their car when the accident occurred.

The 17-year-old driving the car that struck the man has been cooperating with police as they investigate the fatality. The driver has reportedly not been arrested.
