Cyclist escapes injury after horror handlebar flip

A cyclist has had a lucky escape after a horrifying crash on the New South Wales far north coast.

The cyclist struck a piece of metal, while travelling more than 50 kilometres an hour on the side of a freeway near Byron Bay.

It jammed in his spokes and he was suddenly thrown through the air landing on his back.

Somehow he avoided serious injury and the cyclists behind him managed to dodge the fallen rider and his bike.
