'How is this possible?': Coles shopper confused by supermarket's bakery label

A Coles customer has shared his confusion on Facebook when he took a closer look at the label on his baked goods.

The man shared a photo of the supermarket bakery’s Vanilla Creme Crowns to the Coles Facebook page, asking for someone to “please explain how this is possible”.

He said he purchased the baked goods on March 10, the same day the label says they were baked.

But the label said they were made in the United Kingdom, leading the man to question how they had arrived in Australia so quickly.

The man wrote in his post: “who knows when” it was really baked.

The best before date on the label is March 11 just a day after the goods were baked.

“Do you think that this is false advertising or am I being too generous?” the man asked.

Underneath the post, most people offered the same explanation for the label.

“The product is made and frozen in the UK,” one person said.

“It was then baked in store from frozen on the 10th March. Notice on the label how it says ‘BAKED ON’ rather than ‘MADE ON’.”

However, the customer explained he said he believed the label implies the goods were baked fresh on March 10.

“Baking is a different process to thawing from frozen,” he said.

“I expect you would understand whether this is ethical practice or not.”

After another person reiterated the vanilla creme crowns were thawed and then baked, to which the man replied by saying it was misleading for him, it must be for others.

On the Coles website it says due to the “short shelf life” of the Vanilla Creme Crowns, they are not available for delivery before 2pm.

In a statement to Yahoo News Australia, Coles confirmed the pastries are made in the UK, but baked in Australian stores.

“At Coles, we work with global experts in pastry manufacturing to ensure that we have great quality products available for our customers,” a spokesperson said.

“To achieve this level of quality, our Vanilla Crème Crowns are produced in the United Kingdom and then baked in store.”

Last week, a shopper received an unexpected surprise after picking up a packet of hot cross buns from Woolworths.

Squished inside the plastic bag of six buns was the body of a dead fly, which appeared to be enjoying a bite of the white icing when it took its final breath.
