New child cruelty sentencing guidelines to come into force
New sentencing guidelines for child cruelty offences published for courts in England and Wales. The guideline will come into force in courts in England and Wales on 1 January 2019. Under the new guidelines, parents and carers accused of child cruelty could face tougher sentences if they try to shift the blame onto others. Tom Tugendhat MP spoke of a case in his Kent constituency in which a couple were found guilty of causing or allowing their 6-week old son to suffer serious physical harm and neglect. The child had to have both his legs amputated.
