'Devastating': Five shot and killed as gunman storms unit during dinner

A man with a history of issues with his neighbours has been accused of shooting and killing five people at a Chicago apartment complex on Saturday.

The 67-year-old fatally shot three men and one woman after storming into the northwest unit as the group ate dinner at around 5.30pm, police told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Officers said the suspect then entered a unit on the floor above and shot another woman, who died of her injuries on Sunday (local time).

The suspected gunman has not yet been identified or charged as of Sunday afternoon. He was taken into custody shortly after the shooting.

Police said the victims were all adults, though their names have not been released.

First Deputy Supt. Antony Riccio said the man had a history of complaints with his neighbours but investigators “don’t know what set him off”.

Riccio says it’s not clear how the suspect was able to enter the apartments but there was no sign of forced entry.

A weapon has been discovered.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the shooting “devastating”.

An investigation is ongoing.
