An Uber customer has had the shock of his life when a driver charged him a whopping $19,150 ($CAD18,518.50) for a 21 minute ride.
The startled passenger, from Toronto, Canada, took to Instagram to share the extortionate mishap after his eight kilometre ride on December 8.
The error is believed to have occurred during a price surge on the app and the fare should have cost in the region of $14.
A woman claiming to be friends with the unfortunate male shared the social media post of his Uber receipt to her Twitter account which has since garnered considerable attention.
"My friend was charged 18K for a 20 min ride, and they are sticking to it. What in the world??? This is insane!," she wrote.
The Twitter user initially claimed Uber had failed to return the fare however an Uber spokesperson confirmed to online publication Slate that a full refund had been issued.
"There was an error here and it has been resolved. We have provided a full refund to this rider and apologised to him for this experience," they said.
"We have safeguards in place to help prevent something like this from happening, and we are working to understand how this occurred."
