'Burn the car': Woman totals vehicle after spotting a terrifying surprise passenger

A driver has crashed and totaled her car after she spotted a spider and panicked, losing control of her vehicle, police say.

The woman became terrified when she noticed the eight-legged hitchhiker in the front next to her and “panicked and crashed,” police in the New York town of Cairo said.

She suffered a leg injury and significantly damaged the vehicle as a result.

Police shared pictures on Facebook of the crash scene as a warning to other arachnophobic motorists to take more care if they came across an unlikely passenger.

“We know that it is easier for some drivers than others,” the police said.

“But PLEASE, try to teach new drivers and yourselves to overcome the fear and pull over to a safe place.”

The post prompted many to empathise with the woman for her erratic driving.

I almost did the same thing, but luckily I was [in a place] where I could pull over,” admitted one woman who told of finding a spider in her blouse while driving.

“Until it happens to you you can’t say you wouldn’t do that. I am hoping the lady recovers.”

Another joked: “For safety measures should probably burn the car too. Just to make sure it’s really dead.”
