Bunnings shoppers shocked by little-known in-store service: 'awesome'

A viral TikTok is showing Bunnings customers how to use a new, very handy and free in-store service.

For many, disposing of batteries can prove confusing, as their presence in kerbside collection bins is discouraged.

But environmental activist Lottie Dalziel is spreading the word that customers can dispose of old batteries at their local Bunnings, free of charge.

"There is another reason to visit your local Bunnings," she says in the video, captioned "in case the sausage sizzle wasn’t enough."

“They are now offering battery recycling at every single store. This is for household batteries but also power tools as well,” she says.

The batteries that can be recycled include domestic single-use and rechargeable batteries including AA, AAA, C, D and 9V size batteries.

Power tool batteries and button cell batteries and other handheld size batteries are also accepted.

She then encourages Bunnings shoppers to keep their eye out for a marked bin at their local store, telling her viewers that 95 per cent of the battery components can be used again once recycled.

The recycling initiative was launched by Bunnings last November following trials in Victorian stores.

The Bunnings website tells customers that the recycling initiative is a great way to look after the environment.

“Our national battery recycling program is free and easy to use. All our stores have battery recycling bins, making it convenient for customers and tradies to drop off used batteries with confidence, knowing they’ll be recycled,” they said.

“That means less waste, keeping harmful substances out of the environment and recovering and reusing valuable natural resources.”

TikTok reacts to recycling initiative: ‘Never knew!’

Several TikTok users commented on Ms Dalziel’s newest video, calling the recycling initiative "excellent news".

“Didn’t know that, that’s awesome!” commented one TikTok user.

“I have a drawer full of batteries as I've never known what to do with them and didn't want to put it in recycling or rubbish for landfill!” said another.

“Officeworks does it as well,” added a fourth.

Ms Dalziel explained in a previous viral TikTok that E-waste is not suitable to be placed in a kerbside recycling bin.

She shared in a video comment that Officeworks is the best place to dispose of old printer cartridges, chargers and mobile phones.

A Bunnings employee also commented on the TikTok, urging customers to read the bin’s label before using it.

“Half full coffees don’t belong in it, not fun cleaning out the bin and the bottom of it,” they said.
