Brothers plan world trip after $4.8m Lotto win: 'Couldn't believe it!'

Two Newcastle brothers are dusting off their passports after discovering they had won $4.8 million in last night’s Set for Life draw.

The two young brothers, who hail from Waratah in north-western Newcastle, held the only division one entry in the Set for Life draw 2274, drawn on Wednesday, October 27

The lucky winners take home $4.8 million, paid in instalments of $20,000 a month for 20 years.

Speaking to an official from The Lott this afternoon, the young pair discovered how a restless night’s sleep had led to them discovering the winning ticket.

“I had woken up in the middle of the night and I could not get back to sleep, so I was just playing on my phone when I decided to check our ticket,” said one of the brothers.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw we had won. I thought I was dreaming so I called my brother straight away to double check,” he said.

After consoling his brother, who thought something bad had happened, the pair celebrated the life-changing news with a couple of late night drinks together.

“We both took the day off today and we will go out for a nice dinner and some drinks tonight to celebrate some more.”

Young winners plan to 'live life to the fullest'

When asked how they planned to enjoy their windfall, the ecstatic men said they planned to live life to the fullest and see the world.

“Well, we’ve been in lockdown for so long, so we want to get out and have some fun!” one of the winning men said.

“There’s going to be lots and lots of travel for the both of us,” he added.

The winning entry was purchased at Waratah LPO & Newsagency in Waratah, where the owner Michael Phillips said he was excited to hear the winners had been discovered.

"It’s just fantastic news,” said Mr Phillips.

“We are so glad they came back in here to check their ticket. The team were thrilled to be a part of their winning moment. It was incredible,” he said.

The winning numbers in Set for Life draw 2274 were 42, 24, 15, 9, 30, 38 and 11, while the supplementary numbers were 3 and 14.

Search for mystery Newcastle Set for Winner continues

The multi-million dollar win marks the second Set for Life division one prize to land in Newcastle this month, with the first ticket still unclaimed, meaning officials from The Lott are struggling to locate the winners to share the life-changing news.

The first winning ticket, drawn on Saturday, October 9 in Set for Life draw 2256, was purchased at Nina's IGA in Hamilton and is yet to be claimed.

The Lott spokesperson Ally Ramsamy said she is eager to unite the Newcastle winners with their massive prizes and is urging players to check their tickets.

“Imagine how your plans for the rest of the year would change if you scored Set for Life!” exclaimed Ms Ramsamy.

She said the hefty boost to your bank account might make your Christmas look a little different this year.

“Players have told us they have found their winning entries hiding in plain sight on the fridge door or tucked inside their wallet,” she added.

Ms Ramsamy urged anyone who purchased a Set for Life division one winning entry at Nina’s IGA to check their tickets, because they may hold the golden ticket.

“If you realise you’re holding a winning ticket, hold on tight to it and give us a call immediately on 131 868 to confirm your win and start the prize claim process.”

Meanwhile, Yahoo News Australia recently revealed several suburbs with unclaimed winning tickets, worth a total of $15 million – one of which included the Hamilton entry.

The winning suburbs include Woden, Winston Hills, Anna Bay, West Ryde, Mount Hutton, Glenmore Park, Port Macquarie and Wetherill Hill.

The Lott reminds players of the importance of registering their tickets to a player card or online account so their prizes are secure, and they can be contacted directly if they win division one.
