Man gives partner winning $100k scratchie after forgetting her birthday

It's a lucky day for one Queensland man who forgot his partner's birthday but happened to gift her a winning scratchie worth $100,000.

The man from Bray Park, north of Brisbane, admitted he forgot his partner's special day, purchasing an Instant Scratch-it from his local newsagency instead.

Luckily, the cash helped ease the anger of the forgotten birthday girl, who now thinks it's "a pretty funny story".

Mixed up the day of her birthday

Although her birthday ended up being a memorable one, the winning woman admitted to The Lott the day started off "not-so-great".

“It was my birthday, but my partner actually forgot what day it was and hadn’t realised," she explained.

"He thought my birthday was the next day."

Feeling bad, the man gave her a card with some money and scratchies so she could treat herself.

“He said he wanted me to spoil myself, and then hopefully, I would have a win so I could spoil myself even more.

“Which turned out to be better than expected! He’s no longer in the bad books!"

The couple said when they initially began scratching the ticket they thought they'd won $750, but soon discovered it was a lot more than that.

“We kept checking it and thought it was a $10,000 win," the woman said.

“After that, we hid it. We didn’t want to lose it. But the next day, we had to double-check it because we still couldn’t believe it.

“That’s when my partner told me it was a $100,000 win. I just kept saying, ‘No, I don’t believe you! No, truly?’. I went into shock after that.

“Even though I checked it so many times, I still didn’t believe it. I have never won anything in my life, not one thing. It’s amazing!"

The couple celebrated with a nice dinner where they brainstormed ideas of what they could do with their newfound fortune, including some fixes around the house and a new car.

However, at the moment the woman is concerned about how she will top the gift.

"I am still blown away! I am so shocked! I don’t know how I am going to top this gift when it’s his birthday.

“We will certainly put it to good use!”

Newsagency owner 'ecstatic

The owner of the Kensington Village Newsagency Paul Draw said he was "ecstatic" to get a few big wins at the newsagency lately.

“We are absolutely delighted! It’s fabulous news all round,” he said.

“We’ve had so many big wins here lately. The other day we also had a customer win $10,000 on an Instant Scratch-Its ticket and now this.

“It’s incredible. We actually feel so lucky, and we really hope to be able to deliver more big wins to our customers in the future.

“Big congratulations to the winning couple. We wish them all the very best and hope they can really enjoy their prize.”
