'Broom cupboard' up for rent savaged: 'How do you get out?'

An advertisement for a “fully furnished” bedroom the size of a “broom cupboard” has been removed after being heavily mocked by potential renters on social media.

The listing for the room featuring a single bed, window, mirror and small plastic trio of colourful drawers came under fire after being posted online for NZ$180 (A$169) a week by YHS Flatmates, a boarding-style house in Auckland, Stuff.co.nz reports.

“Fall asleep peacefully at any time, this is a real home!” the advertisement, which included additional images of larger rooms, said. Commenters were quick to compare the single bedroom to a prison cell, with one person questioning how a tenant would even move around inside.

“How... do you even get out that door? By the time it swings open, it's likely almost touching the end of the bed,” they wrote, the publication reports. Others speculated the room had previously been a toilet after spotting what appears to be a pipe connection under the mirror.

Someone else alleged it was illegal to rent a room that small, citing a minimum width of 1.8 metres under the Housing Improvement Regulations and Healthy Homes Guarantee Act.

While the images of the “broom cupboard” have since been removed, David, who identified himself as the person who created the listing, told Stuff.co.nz only the larger rooms with queen beds were up for rent, with the single rooms listed for kids to nap in during the day. He told the publication daycare staff also used the smaller areas to rest, but no one stayed in them overnight.

Outrage over 'creepy' detail in $600pw Aussie rental

Earlier this week, an advertisement for a “female-only” roommate garnered mass attention online, not least because of the unapologetically "creepy vibes" it offered.

Despite the male who posted the listing on a Melbourne Facebook group claiming the spare room was “fully furnished”, photos show just a mattress on the tile floor.
