Boy 'forced to eat hot sauce until vomiting, kneel on thumbtacks'

A couple have been arrested after a child was allegedly forced to kneel on sharp tacks and eat hot sauce until he vomited.

Kevin Grant, 31, and Kaitlin Elizabeth Baptiste, 29, were arrested by Naugatuck police after they were called to a home in the town in the US state of Connecticut on October 1.

A warrant for Grant’s arrest says police received an anonymous complaint a child was being locked in a laundry room and only allowed out to eat and to do school work.

It added the boy was also made to kneel on sharp tacks and eat “extremely spicy hot peppers”. If the boy vomited as a result of eating the spicy food, he was made to ingest the vomit, the warrant said.

The pair were arrested on October 16 and Grant was charged with risk of injury to a child, second-degree assault, intentional cruelty to persons, disorderly conduct and second-degree reckless endangerment.

Baptiste was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment, conspiracy to commit disorderly conduct, risk of injury to a child and conspiracy to commit intentional cruelty to persons.

Police said in a statement Baptiste was aware Grant, the boy’s stepfather, was allegedly forcing him to sleep in a locked cupboard for several months and would subject the child to various physical punishments, including kneeling on tacks and drinking hot sauce until he vomited.

Both are due to appear in court on November 10.
