Bandit leaves trail of gold jewellery behind after smash-and-grab heist

A thief is on the run after a daring smash-and-grab jewellery raid on a family business south of Adelaide.

The bandit smashed his way into the Goolwa shopping centre before taking a hammer to South Coast Jewellers and grabbing thousands of dollars’ worth of gold chains before fleeing.

However, not everything went according to plan.

In his rush to flee, he left a trail of gold necklaces behind, dropping most of the stolen loot as he made his getaway.

“There’s no words really, it’s just horrible,” business owner Carly Brook said.

“We’ve just worked so hard to build this here. Yeah, it’s just horrible.”

On Tuesday residents scooped up the jewellery from nearby streets and returned it.

“Sort of puts it all in perspective, that there are good people out there,” Ms Brook said.

It’s not the first time the store has been targeted.

A year ago a thief smashed another display case and stole rings.

Locals are disgusted the well-known family business has been targeted again.

Police are investigating if the robbery is linked to a break-in at a bakery in nearby Hayborough overnight, in which cash was stolen.

The jeweller said she was just thankful that no pieces brought in by customers for repair had been taken.
