How all Australians can see tonight’s Christmas comet and meteor shower

Christmas has come early for Aussie astronomers, with not one but two space spectacles taking place this evening!

The Christmas Comet (named after the time of year it appears) and a Geminid meteor shower are set to light up the sky within just hours of each other.

You’ll need a pair of binoculars or a telescope to catch the Christmas Comet, but the meteor shower will be visible anywhere – even in cities with bright lights!

HOW TO SEE THEM

The Christmas Comet is expected to appear in the east from 9pm AEDT as a green and fuzzy comet, close to the constellation known as Orion, ANU astronomer Dr Brad Tucker told us.

The meteor shower (around 30 big, bright shooting stars per hour), will light up the sky from 11.30PM AEDT and will be visible with the naked eye for most of the night.
