Woman finds decapitated head of pet cat in her backyard

A horrified Adelaide woman has found a cat's severed head in her backyard, days after a pet owner pleaded for the return of her missing feline.

The RSPCA is hoping to find the person responsible for the brutal act of animal cruelty.

The cat's owner posted a message on Facebook three days ago, after her beloved pet named Bear went missing.

The woman said her friendly kitty did not usually wander far from his Para Hills home, and hoped someone might return him.

Days after Bear went missing, a Wynn Vale resident made the gruesome discovery of the pet’s head in her backyard.

The resident took to Facebook to try and find the dead cat’s owner, resulting in the “distressed” woman learning of Bear’s fate, the animal welfare organisation said.

The cat’s body has not yet been found.

An RSPCA inspector was able to formally identify the long-haired, ginger and white cat from photos supplied by the owner.

The manner in which the head has been severed indicates the decapitation was not an accident, the RSPAC said.

RSPCA South Australia Chief Inspector Andrea Lewis said it was a particularly distressing case.

“This cat was someone’s much loved pet and one can only imagine the anguish his owner is experiencing as a result of this awful discovery,” Ms Lewis said.

Police are investigating if the animal cruelty incident is linked to a recent arson attack in which the Wynn Vale property’s rear fence was set alight.

Anyone with information is urged to contact RSPCA on 1300 4 777 22.
