US actor Al Matthews has died aged 75.

According to El Pais, the late star was found dead at his home in La Zenia, Costa Blanca over the weekend, with a neighbour alerting to emergency services.

Further reports claim he was pronounced deceased at the scene. An autopsy will be performed in due course.

Matthews retired to Alicante in Spain in 2005 after an illustrious career in Britain, including roles in hit films Superman III, The Fifth Element and Tomorrow Never Dies.

But his starring role came in 1986 in James Cameron sci-fi film Aliens in which he played Gunnery Sergeant Apone, providing the voice for the character in the 2013 video game spin-off.

Matthews was also familiar to a younger audience as the father of Benny Green in Grange Hill.

The star also enjoyed chart success with his song Fool, which reached number 16 in the UK Singles Chart in 1975.

Away from the talent industry, Matthews served during the Vietnam War as a member of the US Marine Corps. He held 13 combat awards, including two Purple Hearts.

Matthews’ last starring role was in The Price Of Death, a 2018 Western reportedly in post-production according to IMDb.
