Terrifying video shows man centimetres from death while train surfing

Shocked passengers watched in horror through a window as a man diced with death while clinging to a speeding Adelaide train.

Heart-stopping footage captured from inside the carriage appears to show a man standing on the outside of the train and hanging on for dear life as it sped along the Gawler line about 5.30pm on Sunday.

At one moment the train surfer comes within centimetre of colliding with a steel beam over the Thebarton Bridge, according to one shocked passenger who feared the rider might be knocked off.

“It will be alleged when the train arrived at Adelaide Railway Station the male failed to pay for his fare,” SA Police told Yahoo7 News in a statement.

Police and the South Australian transport department said they have on-board and station CCTV and are working to identify the person seen in the footage.

If found, he faces hefty fines totalling up to $2,000 for travel without paying an appropriate fare, and riding in a non-carriage area. He may also be banned from using public transport.
