Brutal homecoming for cat who walked 19km to get back to family

A street-savvy cat has embarked on a 19km journey to be reunited with his family, only to receive a less-than-warm welcome home.

Toby, a 7-year-old feline, apparently wasn’t too pleased when he was given up by his owners to another family, so one day he decided he would simply make his way home.

But upon completion of Toby’s gruelling trek through Wake County, North Carolina, “he was met with heartbreak”, according to an animal welfare group.

“The family he thought had loved him took him to a shelter and asked staff to euthanise him," the Society for the Prevention of Animal Cruelty in Wake County revealed.

“The shelter called us at the SPCA to ask if we could take him in and help him find a new family.”

Social media users left a string of suggestive messages for the “cold-hearted” family who turned their back on the loyal feline.

“These people should no longer be able to adopt an animal of any kind,” one woman responded to the post.

“Some humans are so cold-hearted and disgusting,” another wrote.

“I am desperately searching for one of my fur babies who has gone missing, yet these people wanted this poor baby to be euthanised,” another added.

But in yet another twist, Toby was on Monday adopted by a “cat-savvy mum”.

“Toby has been adopted! He has three new siblings (one feline and two human) and a cat-savvy mum to show him what a loving family is really like,” SPCA of Wake County revealed.
