Boy, nine, shoots his sister, 13, dead after she refuses to give up game controller

A nine-year-old boy has shot his 13-year-old sister dead after a fight over a video game controller in the southern US state of Mississippi, local media reported.

The tragedy took place on Saturday (local time) when the girl refused to give up the controller, Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell said.

The boy then opened fire, shooting his sister in the back of the head, according to reports.

The bullet pierced the girl's brain and she was taken to a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, in a critical condition. She died on Sunday.

An investigation was opened to determine how the young boy had access to a firearm and to what extent he was aware of the danger.

"He's just nine. I assume he's seen this on video games or TV," Sheriff Cantrell said.

"I don't know if he knew exactly what this would do. I can't answer that. I do know it's a tragedy.

"This is all new ground for us, we've never dealt with a kid shooting a kid at age nine."

Such accidents are not rare in the United States, where the debate on gun control rages on.

In September last year, two three-year-old boys were hospitalised after another toddler shot them with a handgun at a US home daycare centre.
