Six rangers team up to capture record-sized 'feisty' crocodile

Rangers at the popular Nitmiluk Gorge in the Northern Territory believe they may have pulled out the largest crocodile from the area, measuring 3.97 metres.

At one of the most visited natural attractions in the Northern Territory, rangers pulled the huge saltwater crocodile from a trap at about 10am on Wednesday.

“We caught three at the gorge last year and that was a record, before that it was very rare we would catch one here," senior wildlife ranger Andrew McPhee told NT News.

“He was feisty. He was banging the trap — he wasn’t happy to be there.”

A group of tourists were treated to the rare site of the capture and say they have "never seen anything like it before".

“I was nervous for the people handling the croc, but it was so great to watch,” Debbie, from the Gold Coast, said.

Mr McPhee said the croc most likely swam upstream into the gorge from the Katherine River.

Wildlife ranger John Burke said people who fish should keep an eye out and be vigilant around those waterways because of crocs.

“Avoid going near the edge of the water, always stand at least five metres from the water’s edge when fishing," he said.
