'The teeth bit onto his toe': Little boy's foot caught in airport escalators

A mother has recalled the horrifying moment her two-year-old son's leg became trapped in an airport escalator.

Andrea Diaczok, from Calgary in Canada, was about to board a flight home at Vancouver Airport on Friday when Julian's boot became caught between the railing and step as they travelled down an escalator.

“His whole boot basically disappeared,” Ms Diaczok told Calgary Herald.

“The teeth bit onto his toe midway... I couldn’t hit the stop so I started screaming for help.”

Ms Diaczok and her husband were preparing for the worst as they saw the boot disappear inside the escalator.

“I didn’t even know if his foot was there … I didn’t know if there’s only a stump there at this point," she revealed.

“It twisted his leg around and broke his leg, and then the entire foot of the boot disappeared in the side of the escalator."

Her son's boot had been chewed up inside the escalator, forcing airport employees and bystanders to rush to his aid and cut him free.

He was rushed to hospital with a fractured leg as well as several cuts and bruises.

Ms Diaczok, who is 22 weeks pregnant, says the harrowing ordeal has taught the family a lesson on safety and has called for others to be aware of dangers when travelling on escalators.

A Vancouver Airport Authority spokeswoman said safety is of utmost importance and an investigation into the incident has commenced.

Julian is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries.
