WATCH: Snake desperate for a drink rescued after stuck in beer can

A snake found an unusual hiding spot inside a beer can in Melbourne but became stuck and had to be rescued.

The venomous tiger snake had slithered into the can on the footpath of Black Forest Drive and McGrath Road at Wyndham Vale in Victoria.

Stewart Gatt from Stewy the Snake Catcher said the snake had got its head stuck inside the can and passers-by were attempting to free the reptile.

He labelled the situation "dangerous".

"The people were trying to cut the snake out themselves, but I quickly told them to stop as the situation was deemed too dangerous," he wrote on his Facebook page.

Mr Gatt said he attempted to cut the snake out himself.

Video shows Mr Gatt cutting a hole in the can for the snake to pop its head through using a pair of pliers.

“Yeah mate, I know you are in pain. Just relax for a minute,” he says in the video.

“Stop struggling for a minute. Relax mate, I am saving you.”

He told the Herald Sun that it's a delicate operation because you could cut the wrong spot and hurt the snake.

Mr Gatt said brown and tiger snakes commonly live in Melbourne’s western suburbs including Werribee and Wyndham Vale. He is often called out to jobs where snakes are caught up in rubbish.

He said all the snake was trying to do was grab a drink. He has been caring for the reptile since its rescue and hopes to release it on Monday.

"If you come across a snake in a similar situation, the best thing to do, is to call a snake catcher immediately," he wrote on Facebook.
